Nispeten yeni müzik paylaşım çılgınlığı Spotify, kısaca özetlemek gerekirse 'reklam izleyerek ücretsiz mp3 dinleme fırsatı yaratan bir firma. Elde ettiği geliri müzisyenlerle "adil" olarak paylaştığını öne süren şirketle aynı görüşte olmayan bazı sanatçılar var. 'Frank Gambale' ve 'Thom Yorke' yeni sistemi müzisyenler açısından değerlendirerek, ilginç detaylara dikkat çekiyor.
Frank Gambale ile başlıyalım;
Frank Gambale yaptığı açıklamada (sayfa sonunda orijinal metin bulunmakta) tüm paylaşım sitelerinden şarkılarını kaldırdığını söyledi.
17.000 oynatım için 15.3 cent ödeme aldığını belirten sanatçı. "Eğer biz sanatçılar eserlerimizin değersiz olduğunu düşünüyorsak, Spotify şarkıları paylaşmak için iyi bir kaynak." diyerek bu durumdan duyduğu kızgınlığı ayrıca belirtmiş.
Aylık $10'lık üyelik ücreti karşılığında insanların istediği tüm şarkıları dinlemesini sağlayan Spotify'nin, sağdık bir kitlesi olduğunu kabul eden sanatçı. Ayrıca şarkı paylaşım sistemine karşı olmadığını da belirtmiş. Fakat bir büyük şartla. Paylaşım firmalarının sanatçılara "adil" ödeme yapması.
Müzisyenlerin esas "kaynak" olduğunu ve yaptıkları işi sevdiklerine değinen Gambale, ne olursa olsun bu işin "bağış" olmadığına dikkat çekiyor.
Sanatçının Rhapsody, Spotify, Rdio'dan aldığı ücretler metnin sonunda yer almaktadır.
Thom Yorke;
Tüm müzisyenlerin bu tür platformlara karşı savaş açması gerektiğine değinin Yorke, eğer bu savaş başlamazsa müzik endüstrisinin öleceğine dikkat çekmiş. Tüm ilginin 'hangi yöntemle müzik dinlenildiği, yeni teknolojinin ne tür kapılar açacağı ve yeni paylaşım sisteminin ne olacağı' üzerine kaydığını belirten Yorke, bu gidişatın durması gerektiği inancında.
In Rainbow albümünde kullanılan yöntemle direk kitleye (dinleyiciye) ulaştığını anlatan Yorke, Spotfy gibi sistemleri pay-what-you-want (istediğin kadar öde) gibi metotları devre dışı bıraktığını açıklıyor.

Müzisyenlerin ürünlerinden gelir elde etmek için bu tür platformlara ihtiyaç duymadığını ısrarla belirten Yorke, özellikle eski albümleri bedava sunarak bu ürünlerin sırtından servet elde edilmesini işaret ediyor.

Hi Folks,
Ok, I think you all know that I am NOT one to rant on...but today I have taken a stand, alongside some other fine Artists who have and are doing the same. My angst is toward music streaming companies such as Rhapsody ( with the emphasis on "sody", Rdio and Spotify to name but a few.
I have instructed CD baby to remove all my catalog of music from those streaming sites.
Why? You may well ask!
If we as Artists believe our music to be worthless, then Spotify and the like are GREAT places to put your music.
17,000 plays of one of my tunes on Spotify paid a whopping 15.3 cents!!!
Now, look folks, I talk to people all the time and many of them say they use Spotify. The consumers love these sites. a month for a subscription, then they play and listen to whatever they want...completely oblivious to the fact that the folks running Spotify and the like are lining their pockets and paying Artists less than peanuts...because I can't afford to buy peanuts to eat if I had to rely on Spotify royalties.
Now folks, I'm not against streaming, I think it's awesome, however, I DO think that these companies need to realize where their revenue is coming from.
In my mind it's utterly pitiful and a disgraceful display of greed and once again Artists being ripped off. Folks, WE, as musicians ARE the source!! We love what we do, but let's face it, we're not a charity!
Here's the facts:
Rhapsody royalty rate = .0091 cents per play
Rdio royalty rate = .0045 cents per play
Spotify royalty rate = .0009 to ZERO ( YES ZERO!!! ) per play!
I rest my case folks. The regular airwave radio stations pay roughly 10 cents a play...these internet radio stations need to pay Artists an actual royalty rate that reflects RESPECT for the music, Artists and Musicians who make the music in the first place.
Thom Yorke;
I feel like the way people are listening to music is going through this big transition. I feel like as musicians we need to fight the Spotify thing. I feel that in some ways what’s happening in the mainstream is the last gasp of the old industry. Once that does finally die, which it will, something else will happen. But it’s all about how we change the way we listen to music, it’s all about what happens next in terms of technology, in terms of how people talk to each other about music, and a lot of it could be really fucking bad. I don’t subscribe to the whole thing that a lot of people do within the music industry that’s ‘well this is all we’ve got left. we’ll just have to do this.’ I just don’t agree.
When we did the In Rainbows thing what was most exciting was the idea you could have a direct connection between you as a musician and your audience. You cut all of it out, it’s just that and that. And then all these fuckers get in a way, like Spotify suddenly trying to become the gatekeepers to the whole process. We don’t need you to do it. No artists needs you to do it. We can build the shit ourselves, so fuck off. But because they’re using old music, because they’re using the majors… the majors are all over it because they see a way of re-selling all their old stuff for free, make a fortune, and not die. That’s why to me, Spotify the whole thing, is such a massive battle, because it’s about the future of all music. It’s about whether we believe there’s a future in music, same with the film industry, same with books.
To me this isn’t the mainstream, this is is like the last fart, the last desperate fart of a dying corpse. What happens next is the important part.
