As members of the New York music collective Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Lati Kronlund and Papa Dee have been playing funky boogaloo-jazz-hip hop-dub to dancing audiences around the world since the mid-nineties. Pick up any of BFE's four studio albums, and you can hear that this group has a very wide range of musical influences, which they somehow manage to merge into their own unique style and sound.
When they are not on the road with BFE, both of them also like to DJ, and they have a special fondness for spinning together back-to-back. Just like a BFE show, their sessions are like a melting pot of their favorite rhythm based musics all rolled into one furious groove.
Going back in time to the sounds of early Jamaican ska and rock steady, dipping into jungle or drum and bass from the nineties, back to the roots of funk and r&b and the hip-hop that it created, sliding into early electro-disco, house and Afro beat, with sudden leaps into funky punk rock or long downhill stretches of deep techno. Lati likes to drop some of their own reworkings and mash-ups of classic tracks and BFEfavorites while Papa Dee intermittently toasts over the bleeps and bumps for an all together original pledge of allegiance to the funk.
Equally comfortable in a small sweaty club or on a festival stage, they can adapt to short energy sets or long all night sessions. Depending on venue size and set time, they can also do a live structured set including instruments and original material, or a straight up DJ session spinning vinyl and CDs.
